Posts: 891 08/23/08 14:30:23 Eye in the Sky	Tags : None Heard from a friend of mine and yours just yesterday, that the firing of PF was VERY imminent last fall and would have probably been done if we hadn't lucked out the USC game against Spurrier. Apparently the staff at Wake Forest was in pretty involved talks with the UTAD and they were under the impression the UTAD was about to pull the trigger on PF. So we went from there to winning the USC, Vandy, and KY games on almost pure luck and this translated to Fulmer and his Agent virtually getting to write their own contract on Fulmer's kitchen table! Fulmer literally went from a missed FG against USC (or the fumble recovery by McClendon) in being fired to being able to write his own contract with THE most favorable terms a HC could EVER get! Amazing thing for true UT fans! First off, there's some magic dust for you right there. Second, why the hell the big swing from damn near fired to that sweet ass contract? If he was that close to getting canned how can they give him that deal so soon afterwards. Ridiculous. Third, why the hell are we already putting a deal together with the Wake staff in season before anything is done? Hell they may be the best for the job, but dammit you gotta go beating all the best bushes for this job. Oh wait, my bad. We're not as plum a job as we think we are. I guess they think we are on the same par as a program with Wake so that's who we should go after. I hate the UTAD. ***Edit- Oops! Original post courtesy of AV. But due to one of our OLmen twicthing before the ball was snapped, a dead ball penalty was called, stepped off 5 yards, and we nailed the FG from 5 yards further. That SOB couldn't possibly have been luckier. Between that, the McClendon recovery, the missed FG by USC, the roughing the kicker penalty by Vandy (we were BEAT DEAD TO RIGHTS when that moron roughed us) and multiple plays in the OT periods at UK, including the chip shot FG Williams blocked, there simply is no way to justify changing your intentions as an AD due to things like that. Bottom line is we HAD a 24 point lead on USC at half time and blew it; we were dead to rights against VANDY for the 2nd time in 3 years; and we had a huge lead against UK that Phildo squandered by his conservative bullshit. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, prevented those three games from being losses other than pur luck and in the UK case, some balls out plays by a few players in OT. From the amateurish Shoney's buffet depositions, to the Media Day circus the first wave of subpoena's produced, to the latest dazzling display of befuddlement in Birmingham, Coach Fulmer has demonstrated himself to be a slow-witted, indecisive, easily flustered mastodon among his younger and far more nimble peers. I'm basing this entirely on nothing but speculation and Phil's track record with assistants. He's not handled any sort of internal conflict well. He screwed up the Barry situation and dropped the ball with Troop. If he couldn't make Troop happy then how in the hell can he manage Clawson? Clawson has an ego I'm sure, and he's a former head coach with little to bind him to Fulmer other than his contract. I'm not sure how he'll respond to any micromanagement especially when it's ultimately Clawson's ass when it comes down to performance.....remember Sanders? He sure got shit on. I believe there was a little conflict with Cut the last time around, and Cut basically came back to Fulmer on his own terms. But still, I'm sure Fulmer bristled at some of cut's initial comments in the media and his observations at how sloppy the program had become. Fulmer claimed he liked how Clawson was, "Just hard headed enough to argue with me during the interview." ??? Say what Phil? You'll like it much less if he doesn't "learn his place" amongst your gobins. And if Chavis was jealous of Troop, when will that shit rear its ugly head again? Troop was a WR and RB coach, with a good rapport with players. And that's it. So John boy's problem was what? Chavis is either obviously a racist or can't handle ANY threat to the cozy, comforting and non-challenging relationship he and Phil have enjoyed for years, and years. I'm voting for the latter. Fulmer must feel a NEED for assistants who owe him something. He craves personal loyalty over performance, again I'm basing this on track record, and Clawson doesn't have the "ties that bind" necessary for him to take a whole hell of a lot of blame or interference from Dubba Chin the Jowl Master. So, if things get ugly on offense, it will be very interesting to see what happens. Things may be too deep this time to throw Clawson under the bus, and I feel like he's not the kind of guy who will take it unconditionally just because, "Aw heck, Phil's been good to me, who else would hire me?"
