Has Pat Summit's day passed her by? |
Lead | ||
|
Let's all just admit that Tennessee Women's basketball pretty much dominated the sport for years when they were basically the only really good team in
the game. The past 10-15 years have seen them be joined by 8-10 programs who are day in, day out just as good or better than they are. I know this team is
young, but c'mon. Where in the world is all the talent? Getting railroaded by a mediocre Kentucky team is unacceptable. I shudder to think what Geno
would have done with this young group of girls. He always seems to get a lot out or freshmen and sophomores. Has the competition just caught up? Or is this
just the early signs of Pat losing her touch?

How I miss Al Brown. Like Cut did for Fulmer, he made Pat look awfully good. | #21

Yes this is a rebuilding year, but Pat can't coach offense, pure and simple.

The thing about Pat's coaching is that she could win championships with defense | #22

because nobody had an offense. Times have changed.

In a word: no. However, the talent is definitely down this year. The worst thing though | #23
|
is the loss of leadership that they had with Candace Parker. How many times did that phenomenal player put the whole team on her back and, with one arm hanging
from her shoulder by a thread, will that team to a victory? CP was a once in a generation player and she and every other starter are gone. It seems that
Pat's teams over the years have always had young players but usually those youngsters had the luxury of playing under the leadership of older players. This
year the most-experienced player is a sophomore. And IMO the overall best player by far (Vickie Baugh) was lost for the season. I'm trying to avoid using
the term "Perfect Storm" but in some ways that's what this season is. However, let's get real - Pat Summitt not only didn't get stupid
yesterday, she didn't get stupid EVER. Unlike another Perfect Storm coach this one won't pass around a DVD's worth of excuses and otherwise do
nothing to fix this. She won't let some Little League parents tell her who to play and she won't blame the problems on an undeserving player. Instead,
she will fix it. Maybe not this season but she will fix it. There is nothing in her history to suggest otherwise.

It's called parity | #24 | ||
|
WCBB is now deeper in talent, and CPH doesn't have talent edge she used to (except for Parker years in '07-08). This trend toward parity started about
10 years ago after Pat's great teams with Chamique Holzclaw. Since then there was only one dominant team-- the UConn-Tirausi era that won 3 titles. Now
WCBB has gone from about 3-4 teams that could win the title in any year, to about 8-12 teams that could win. Look at the Ladyvols title run last year, we
almost lost to Texas A&M in the Elite-8, and LSU in the semifinal. Five of of Pat's eight titles have come with two of the greatest WCBB players
ever. Her formula does win- defense and rebounding, but she needs exceptional players to do it. The jury is still out on this group, but they certainly
haven't taken to Pat's style of play-- yet. Let's see what they do next year after a year of maturity.

BV, the loss of Al Brown was and is a HUGE blow | #25
|
Al is the best scout and asst coach in the women's game and also a great talent evaluator. Every time we have played a Mighigan St (NCAA Final 4 semis) or
Duke team he has coached, they have beaten us or we have had real trouble with them. He KNOWS Pat's offense & defense. This team just flat out laid the
wood to a really good GA team 78-48 for Pat's 1000th win, and they have been just awful since then. Someone else on the board said the lack of quick
athletic, great shooting guards as well as a great point guard are this team's Achilles heel. Agree. Loss of Nikki Caldwell to be HC at UCLA was huge on
the staff as well. On another point the loss of their best player and inside/outside presence, Vicki Baugh, has killed them. Parity has played a role. BUT
after the GA game for whatever reason this team has bagged it. The recruits they brought in are really fine talents but there's no Candace or Chamique or
Tamika level players among them. Pat had Maya Moore, the best player in the nation from Atlanta, committed up until signing day when she switched to UConn. I
can tell you why privately. Moore is the best player in the nation as a soph at UConn. The Lady Vols may play UTC in Chattanooga in the first round 4 seed vs
13 seed. They only beat UTC by ONE earlier in the year here.

Al seems to be an odd duck. He's bounced around all over the place. And we've won 2 NCs without him. | #26

Here's something telling about Summitt... | #27
|
Somebody on another board posted a list of UT Lady Vols all-time best players...This is the list: Chamique Holdsclaw Tamika Catchings Semeka Randall Bridgette
Gordon Daedra Charles Candace Parker Nikki McCray Dena Head Cindy Brogdon Patricia Roberts Kara Lawson Michelle Marciniak Holly Warlick Carla McGhee Jill
Rankin Tonya Edwards Dawn Marsh Alexis Hornbuckle Sheila Frost Cindy Noble (Next five in: Lea Henry, Shyra Ely, Gwen Jackson, Tanya Haave, and Shanna Zolman.)
What do you notice: Except for Parker and Lawson, who graduated about six years ago, there are almost NO really good offensive players on the list from the
last 10 years!!! G. Jackson could score--but Hornbuckle, Zolman and Ely are a BIG stretch. Zolman was in no way an exceptional player: she could make
uncontested threes--I'll give her that--but she had no game otherwise--nothing; Hornbuckle, Ely and Semeka Randall are CLASSIC examples of players who had
some offensive game when they got to UT--but by the time Summitt was through giving them a four-year beatdown they couldn't throw the ball in the ocean.
Seriously. Randall was a good offensive player as a freshman and her offensive game deteriorated every year thereafter; she was terrible as a senior; Ely, the
same; Hornbuckle, pretty much the same: great athlete but did not develop offensively AT ALL!! Anosike? Tremendous defensive player and rebounder (PS must have
got faint-hearted thinking about her sometimes)--but did not develop an offensive game AT ALL in four years. Actually, I take that back: IN the last two or
three games of her career, in the ncaa tournament, she actually made a three or four six-foot shots--something she had not done at all in the four years
previously. I'm not really trying to denigrate PS--I do love what's she meant to UT and do respect her success. But I DO think she's VERY overrated
as a coach. If you took the best college players in American, cloned them, and gave one squad to PS and one to Geno A of Conn. to face, say, a team from
Brazil, Geno's team would shoot 48 percent and win by 25. Pat's team would shoot 30 percent from the floor and win by two in the last minute on an
offensive putback.

Summitt evicts Lady Vols from their locker room, possibly til SEC playoffs | #31

Question for burntorange or anyone? | #32
|
Concerning Summitt 's latest motivational ploy? (kicking team out of lockeroom). I could see this if there was a lack of effort on player's part but I
see confusion, lack of talent (needs one outside shooter who can create her own shot) , no confidence and no offensive cohesion as the main problems. I went
thru this motivational "stuff" at Parris Island but I don't think it will help here, your thoughts?

real turf fan wrote:She's done this before, as the article mentions - and if any of you have ever seen the Lady Vols' locker room, then you know this is indeed a punitive measure! Again, after eight national championships spread over three decades, I'd say CPS knows what she's doing. It may take more than the rest of this season to sink in, but those that stick around will be a whole lot better for it. |
