Has Pat Summit's day passed her by? |
Lead | ||
|
Let's all just admit that Tennessee Women's basketball pretty much dominated the sport for years when they were basically the only really good team in
the game. The past 10-15 years have seen them be joined by 8-10 programs who are day in, day out just as good or better than they are. I know this team is
young, but c'mon. Where in the world is all the talent? Getting railroaded by a mediocre Kentucky team is unacceptable. I shudder to think what Geno
would have done with this young group of girls. He always seems to get a lot out or freshmen and sophomores. Has the competition just caught up? Or is this
just the early signs of Pat losing her touch?

Competition is catching/has caught up. Too many young players who aren't as good as advertised during recruiting.

for having 7 freshmen? I'd wager that we could play our freshmen and sophomores against everybody else's freshmen and sophomores and walk away with
the title. But I also know that's not how it goes down, they're young, give 'em a chance to grow. She just came off back to back NC's and the
game has passed her by? Idk about that. Sounds a little harsh. But that's just me, to some people around here her championships aren't pretty
enough cause they are won with defense and rebounding and not a pretty high scoring offense.

Poor talent evaluation and needs one assistant coach who specializes in offense should do the trick. I subscribe to the Lane Kiffin school of recruiting, no
star* gazing and recruit according to need.

She isn't quick enough to create her own shot and can't get by the quicker players who guard her. She continues to throw up 3's with opponents in
her face. All to no avail.
The Lady Vols really need some quick athletic guards who can score. "There are always a couple of folks in the media willing to trade their credibility for an exclusive interview or a pat on the back from the '5-6
wasn't really that bad' crowd". - John Pennington in his 9/3/2007 KNS article after Tennessee's loss to California

I think he's either at Duke or NC now. He addressed the football team a few years ago for motivation. I wonder if his leaving has hampered us?

"Bit by bit, year by year, the Big Orange glow has dimmed. Too many key losses in too many big games since '98 have removed Tennessee from the elite list of teams annually considered as national championship contenders. It takes more than one of the biggest stadiums in college football and a nifty fight song to be in the national title hunt every year. Not only does it take great recruiting, but taking the talent and improving it, and neither has happened with the Vols lately. _________________ UT markets Nostalgia/Traditions rather than Wins vs Losses. --AtlantaVol |

Didn't Pat Head win the NC last year or am I in a time warp? Sure it was easier when | #10

she was the only game in the country. I'm no huge women's basketball fan but Head is a fire pisser. There is such a big difference between HS and
College. It takes most time to adjust.

Yes, There are two issues with Summitt: | #11
|
The first is that her recruiting is surprisingly spotty for a program of our stature. She signs a lot of one-dimensional players who just aren't very good.
The last three shooting guards she has signed have all lacked the athleticism to be effective--can't get open and can't create off the dribble.
You'd think that she could sign good all-around PGs, too, but you can count on one hand the number of really good PG's she had over the years--very
few. The two best PGs PS ever had were Dena Head and Kelly Jolly--who both played a LONG time ago (Head in the 1980s, Jolly in the mid-1990s.) That is telling!
She's not had any PGs as good as those too since!! That is bizarre for a coach who annually brings in a boatload of supposed HS AAs!! She had two PGs at
the start of this year--neither one of them destined to be very good. She had to bring in two Juco guards two years ago because she had no talent at the
position! Summitt is also CLUELESS about coaching team offense---which is why her teams consistently struggle to score. Unless she's got a superstar talent
like Parker, UT will be mediocre (at best) on offense. It's no coincidence that PS went about 10 years without a national title before landing Parker--and
it was only because Parker and Anosike (no offense) were so stout defensively that the Vols won two straight titles. When Parker was out of the game last year,
the Vols struggled mightily to score--which should not be the case on a team full of AAs. Her teams never pass the ball well--that's a fact. Another
problem is that any kid who does have some offensive skills but is not elite (like Bjorklund) tends to lose her offensive confidence under PS because she is so
obsessed with defense and rebounding. Anybody recall the title game two years ago, when UT beat Rutgers: embarrasingly ugly--nobody could make a shot. PS won
about six of her national titles before the women's game developed any depth at all--she got the jump on everybody, and deserves credit for that, I
suppose. But she is overrated as a coach, IMO. Her win ugly with defense philosophy still works because, even with the spotty recruiting and annual offensive
woes, she gets more talent than 95 percent of the teams in the country. There are fewer than 10 top programs in the game--and while the players are getting
better and better, scoring is still often a challenge, which helps a defensive-minded coach like PS. My problem with PS is that, despite all her clout and her
reputation, she could never put together a team like Uconn this year--a team with athletes who get up and down the court, move the ball, can pass and shoot and
light up the scoreboard. PS has been great for UT--tremendous--but the game HAS passed her by to a large degree--and that would have been more apparent had not
Candace Parker come along and bolstered her rep. If you liked missed shots and rebounding, PS is the coach for you.

OMG dishing a coach who just won the championship last year? Are you shitting me...who recruited Parker and Anosike? Jesus, sometimes teams do not mesh, no
matter what a coach can do they just don't work well together.
Damn people if there is such a thing as a living-coaching legend it would be Pat Summit. Look at UConn last year with the youth, hell i'm not even going there... |

Unfortunately, a lot of people arent going to read it cause it just looks like a wall of words. "That may or may not mean somthing. One might have better receivers, a different system, different coaching. The number of touchdowns might not mean anything. Then again it might. Just hard to say without knowing more than just the numbers." Bawl Tweb 2/19/09 |

Come on, people... | #15 | ||

The LVs won the last two national championships, but all five of last year's starters graduated and went on to professional b-ball - leaving a huge void in
leadership and maturity. With one senior and no juniors, there is just no leadership coming from the players themselves, and seven freshmen are just too much
to balance with only one upperclassman. Think "blind leading the blind," which you have to admit might explain their shooting percentages...
Edit: Oh, yeah, and they also lost two of their "veterans" (i.e. sophomores) to knee injuries - one who's gone for good. There's only so much help they can provide from the bench...

The only thing I can think of is.... | #16
|
That she is coaching for the years to come. That team is screaming to be put in a zone defense and the offense is retched to watch. I think she could coach them to beat teams like KY by significantly dumbing down what she's doing, but later on they wouldn't be as good a team.....at least that's a theory - while I've never been real impressed with her offenses, I've never seen a LV team look so out of sorts as this one does....... I don't understand why she expects Boerkland (sp?) to create shots, it's never going to happen and she doesn't have a quick shot if she could get open - they should be setting high screens for her and letting her work off them and run then look down low or reverse. The big problem with that is that she's a terrible passer and a liability on defense (and she clearly has lost confidence in her shot, anyway). Glory Johnson seems to regress every game, Stricklen, who in my opinion is the best player on the team, just disappears for large stretches. They don't have a point guard who's even remotely consistent. I think Bass will be very good one day, but that day's not here. At this point, the rest of them are role players at best, but nobody on this team right now is prepared to step up (fuller is trying, I guess) and actually lead this team on the floor. I was amazed at the similarities between that game and the men's the night before.....

I mean she could really coach 6 months ago, but now not so much. Winning those back to back championships really did something to her brain.
Never have I seen a coach's talents deteriorate so quickly. You buncha stupid dumbasses. This place is turning into farce. Because what will happen is posters like Bassy will attack my ass instead of the others on this thread who were critical of Pat.
Anyhow, it was never Pat's day when it comes to Xs and Os. She is not a great tactician by any stretch. You could pick out 20 women's coaches better than her. 50 even. Maybe 100. Who knows -- maybe more. And I don't care what Bob Knight or some columnist says. However, when the overall product is considered, it's hard to say that anything has passed her by. Our women's basketball program may be, all things considered, the greatest in the history of college sports. |
